Bringing Your Experiences to Your Home

As you are beginning to decorate your new home, I believe that it is very important to include accessories that are from your personal experiences. These pieces will not only provide points of interest and conversation starts for any guests you may have, but they will also help you create a personal space for yourself that is unique to you and what you like to do. If you travel for example, I think that it is a wonderful idea to display a map with all the places that you have visited or want to visit highlighted or pinpointed. If you have traveled and enjoy picking up artifacts or souvenirs from the places you’ve been, try picking up some things that you could easily display on a book case or coffee table such as a doll or even a book with pictures. My grandmother has a bar in her house which the family affectionately refers to as the “monkey bar” in which there are shelves filled to overflowing with things she has picked up all over the world in her travels. Growing up, this has always been one of my favorite rooms in the house because it always keeps you interested and you can always find something new to examine. A photo album is another great thing to put on display so that people can flip through it and ask about its contents. You can show photos of anything and everything! I would showcase pictures of family, friends, trips, and favorite things in order to show of the things you care about.

I know that I’ve been focusing on traveling a lot, but that is just something that I am really interested in. This is the point of this post however, to get you to understand that it can be anything that you are interested in as long as you are bringing the things that you love into your home! If you knit, put together a fun colored throw for your couch that will make you happy each time you curl up with it. If you love to photograph images, frame some of your favorites and hang them on your walls. I love that each home is unique because of the feelings and overall atmosphere that the people who live there bring into the environment.

In my experiences in visiting peoples’ homes, I always love looking at their bookshelves and seeing not only what kinds of books they have, but also what kinds of knick knacks and baubles that they display. I think you can learn a lot about a  person this way and vice versa. But even beyond trying to create an interesting space for outsiders, be sure to create a space that is enjoyable for you! After all, you will be living there and looking at everything all the time. If you bring positivity to your space through the items you have, you will feel that positivity each day.

This may seem like something that is a given, but you would be surprised at how many houses seem so depressing because of the lack of personality. So, I cannot stress enough for you to really make your space your own and be happy with it!

Until next week!

🙂 Kaelyn
